Helmet Cycling Mirror Comparison

The following Cycling Mirror Comparison study was performed to demonstrate the usefulness of the image given to the user of the Original Clearview Micro Helmet Mirror compared to other popular models of helmet mounted mirrors.

Method:  Helmet mirrors were attached to an apparatus which consistently placed the mirror relative to the camera to provide a simulated field of view.   Two cones were placed approximately 15 feet apart, and a photograph was taken from approximately 100 feet away.  The results are as follows:

Third Eye Pro: 135mm length, 40mm lens, 60x35mm oval attachment

This was one of the largest mirrors tested with the largest area needed to attach to a helmet. Once attached, adjustment is made via two ball and socket joints. The field of view was able to view both cones.

Cycle Aware Reflex: 130mm, 30x45mm oval lens, 35x25mm rectangular attachment

This mirror was unique since the lens is oval, and adjustment is achieved by manipulating the flexible arm in addition to a socket joint located on the mirror itself. Although it was not able to view both cones in its field of view, the field of view is still useful as it was able to give the user a good rearward view.

Sunlite: 145mm, 35mm diameter lens, 20mm diameter attachment

This mirror was the longest mirror with a relatively small area needed for attachment.  The image, depending on its distance to the users eye, was variable, but mostly adequate.

Tiger Eye: 100mm, 40mm diameter lens, variable attachment via spoke

This mirror gave a large, sharp image when used. The attachment is unique as it uses a spoke to coil onto the shell of the helmet.

Third Eye Foam: 85mm, 30mm diameter lens, 15x20mm velcro attachment

The field of view is similar to that of the above mirrors with a smaller lens and a shorter arm. Attachment/detachment is easy using the small velcro patch.

With the smallest dimensions in all categories of the mirrors in this study, the image produced did not only produce a similar field of view, but the image is clear and provides useful information to the user. In addition, the smallest lens will produce the least about of forward viewing blind spot. And, the smallest mounting surface required allows it to be used with a larger variety of helmets.
